SMCAS Speaker Meeting

Physics vs. Time Travel
Fri Nov 01, 2013
7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Join the local astronomy community in our planetarium.

Speaker: Prof. Ken Wharton SJSU
Topic: "Physics vs. Time Travel"

Everyone loves a good time travel story. However, given what we know -- and don't know -- about physics, is time travel in any way plausible? Using popular movies as a framework, Prof. Ken Wharton will outline several distinct categories of consistent time travel stories, and discuss possible connections with actual physics.

Ken joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy at SJSU in 2001. While originally an experimental laser physicist, he is now a full-time quantum theorist, and has authored many scientific papers.  He has also been known to occasionally publish “hard” (scientifically-accurate) science fiction stories, including his Divine Intervention that won the Special Citation for the 2001 Philip K. Dick Award. Ken earned his BS in Physics at Stanford University in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Physics at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1998.
