Understanding the Adolescent Brain
Implications for Instruction, Counseling and Problem Behaviors in the Classroom
Adolescence, in terms of cognitive development. is a period that starts in the early teens and, we now know, extends into the mid-20's.
As we are all aware, adolescents, who comprise most of our students, often act in irrational and counterproductive ways. Why do adolescents act the way they do? Â What's going on in their heads? Why is this such a turbulent period for many young people? And how does this affect their ability to study and behave reasonably? And what can we as educators do to assist them?
In this workshop, clinical psychologist and educator Dr. Paul Marcille, who specializes in working with adolescents, will explain some of the inner workings of the adolescent brain, present some of the latest research about the complex and developing connections, which will help us to understand some of the difficulties young people experience at this age. He will also present a variety of methods that we can use in our teaching, advising and counseling students who are adolescents to be more successful in their studies and in making better decisions in their lives.

Dr. Paul Marcille is a licensed clinical psychologist and the director of undergraduate studies at Palo Alto University and the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. He has over 25 years experience working in university settings as a professor, counselor, and dean. He also has over 25 year's experience working clinically with adolescents. Dr. Marcille serves on the board of directors of the Santa Clara County Psychological Association and the California Psychological Association.
