How long is the Dental Hygiene Program?
The actual Dental Hygiene Program is two years including summer sessions. However there are a number of prerequisites, so in reality it takes longer than two years to become a Registered Dental Hygienist. The surest way to gauge the required time is attend an informational meeting offered through the Division of Math and Science.

Is the College of San Mateo's Dental Hygiene Program accredited?
The College of San Mateo has entered into the accreditation process with the American Dental Association. The College of San Mateo is also accredited academically by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. We will be the only accredited Dental Hygiene Program in San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin Counties. The College of San Mateo has recently received approval from the State Chancellor to proceed with the program. Dental Hygiene is an official Major at the College of San Mateo.

What is the cost of the Dental Hygiene Program?
The cost is approximately $10,000 for both years. This includes instruments, books, uniforms and other miscellaneous fees. There is financial aid available through the College and information about that will be given to you at the informational meeting. This does not cover the fees for either the National or State Boards.

Are there counselors familiar with the Dental Hygiene Program?

There are two counselors who are familiar with the Dental Hygiene Program. Please call the counseling center at (650) 574-6400 and ask for an appointment with either Modesta Garcia or Michelle Horan. Either counselor will answer your questions and help you plan your academic future. 

Is there credit for Dental or Dental Hygiene courses taken at other Colleges? 

No advanced standing is granted within the Dental Hygiene program. However, you may check with the counselors to find out if any of these classes may qualify for some of the prerequisites.
