College of San Mateo counselor wins prestigious Harvard leadership award
San Mateo, CA; March 28, 2008—College of San Mateo Counselor and Professor Modesta Garcia received an award at the recent 2008 Harvard Alumni Association Leadership Conference, a worldwide event in Cambridge, Massachusetts, sponsored by Harvard University.

College of San Mateo hosts C-SPAN election bus on March 11
San Mateo, CA; March 7, 2008—College of San Mateo will host C-SPAN’s election bus on March 11 from 9 to 11 am in front of the campus library. The college is hoping that students, staff and the community will join the thousands of people who have already toured C-SPAN’s Campaign 2008 Bus as part of the “Road to the White House.”

College of San Mateo security responds immediately to altercation on campus
San Mateo, CA; February 26, 2008—Around noon today in its main quad area, a fight broke out at College of San Mateo between two and three individuals and escalated to involve approximately 20 individuals, according to the initial report from the campus’ Security Department.  There were injuries and one person was taken to the hospital.

College of San Mateo Science Building and Planetarium win construction and design award
San Mateo, CA; December 11, 2007—College of San Mateo’s state-of-the-art Science Building and Planetarium were awarded last week for their construction and design by California Construction magazine.

Although College of San Mateo’s fall semester is winding down, we still have an array of educational, entertaining and open-to-the-public events lined up in December.

College of San Mateo is offering a variety of new classes for the spring 2008 semester 
San Mateo, CA; November 14, 2007—College of San Mateo is offering an array of new classes in the upcoming spring 2008 semester, which begins January 22. Registration for spring begins November 20 for new, former and continuing students. For students’ convenience, classes are posted at https://websmart.smccd.edu/schedule.htm and the new offerings at collegeofsanmateo.edu/newclasses.

Rocket Launch at CSM
College of San Mateo professors such as Brandon Smith and Amy Sobel often innovate to enhance learning.
This semester the two professors of English as a Second Language have planned a special event associated
with the reading of “October Sky” in their classes. As a way to celebrate their completion of the book, the students along with the two professors will be launching rockets in campus parking lot 15 next Friday, November 16, at noon.

The Mary Meta Lazarus Child Development Center at College of San Mateo announces sponsorship of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The program is available without charge to all enrolled children.
In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this agency is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.

College of San Mateo broadcasting professor wins film fest award for cinépoetry
Michelle Brown, an associate professor of broadcast & electronic media at College of San Mateo, was recognized recently for her cinematography and editing on “Slippery Shiny Feathery Things” at The Berkeley Video & Film Festival 2007.

College of San Mateo student among select nation-wide group awarded for academics and civic involvement 
San Mateo, CA; September 4, 2007— College of San Mateo student Rocio Montesinos has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and, at an informal ceremony last week, she was presented a scholarship certificate by CSM President Michael Claire.

San Mateo, CA; July 16, 2007—In an effort to deliver information to the community about its many classes, programs and services, College of San Mateo will be present at two major San Mateo events in July and August:
the FESTA ITALIANA Di San Mateo Street Fair on July 22 and the San Mateo County Fair on August 10-12 and August 17-19.

San Mateo, CA; June 25, 2007—College of San Mateo has launched its new “Instrumentation/Calibration Technician Program” this summer to train students for jobs in a variety of fields, including biotechnology.

College of San Mateo’s planetarium re-opened today
San Mateo, CA; June 18, 2007—College of San Mateo is pleased to announce that its new planetarium re-opened for classes today —the first day of the community college’s summer session. Community shows are planned to resume in July and other outreach events this fall.

College of San Mateo has new vice president of instruction
San Mateo, CA; June 18, 2007—Dr. Susan Estes is College of San Mateo’s new vice president of instruction. At its meeting last Wednesday night, the San Mateo County Community College District Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Estes for the high-level administrator position and CSM’s former dean of language arts will begin her new responsibilities on July 1.

College of San Mateo student selected for $20,000 scholarship to attend UC Santa Cruz
San Mateo, CA; May 25, 2007— College of San Mateo student Hugo Rafael Mora, whose early life was a sharp contrast to his positive community college experience, recently received welcome news. To help him continue his educational quest, Mora was awarded a $20,000 scholarship from the University of California at Santa Cruz to attend the four-year school this fall.

College of San Mateo offers evening of information for high school seniors and parents on May 22
San Mateo, CA; May 16, 2007--College of San Mateo is hosting a special two-hour event on May 22 in the school’s theatre, beginning at 6:30 pm.  “Connect to College: A Night of Information for High School Seniors and Parents” will offer those attending an opportunity to learn about all that CSM has to offer—and the list is considerable.

Students host fund-raising basketball tournament at College of San Mateo in June
San Mateo, CA; April 24, 2007—Attracting future college and professional players, the Unity Among Brothers (UAB) Basketball Tournament at College of San Mateo (CSM) will be held June 1 and 2 in the campus gymnasium. UAB is a student organization at CSM and raises funds for the North Central San Mateo Twilight Basketball Youth Crime Prevention Program with the tournament.

Invitation to a Special Event

Longtime Chancellor Dead at 75
San Mateo, CA; February 20, 2007—Chancellor-Emeritus Lois A. Callahan died February 18 following a sudden illness.  Dr. Callahan was widely recognized as one of the outstanding educators in California, and was one of the first women in America named to be president of a large college.  She was 75 years old.

Ribbon cutting ceremony for College of San Mateo’s new state-of-the-art Planetarium next week
San Mateo, CA; February 12, 2007—College of San Mateo is preparing to officially introduce its new state-of-the-art Planetarium to the community on February 23 at a ribbon cutting ceremony. Beginning at 2:30 p.m., the event will take place at the entrance of CSM’s new Science facility (Building 36). The celebration will include Planetarium shows, Science Building observatory tours and refreshments.

Fulbright Scholar in Residence to teach at College of San Mateo during the spring 2007 semester
San Mateo, CA; January 23, 2007—College of San Mateo is proud to host a Fulbright Scholar in Residence from Japan, Dr. Yukio Tsuda, during the spring semester. Possessing a Ph.D. in communication studies from Southern Illinois University, he will teach Speech Communication 150, Intercultural Communication, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, on Wednesday evenings at CSM.

San Mateo, CA; January 18, 2007—College of San Mateo will provide high school seniors and their parents information in English and Spanish about how to apply for thousands of dollars in financial aid for college education at an annual campus workshop on February 3 and 7.
