President's Message

At College of San Mateo, education is liberatory. It is part of our vision as a College. We support students to strengthen their voice and build power within their communities in order to shape their future. This year, we further moved that belief into practice by continuing to align who we are with what we do every day.

Our federal designations as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American, Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) are not just titles. They are commitments to serve our communities. They challenge us to design courses, services, and spaces where culture is an asset, belonging is fundamental, and success is shared.

I would like to highlight two new additions to the College that really brought these commitments to life. This year, CSM launched its Pride Center, the first in our District. The Pride Center provides a daily, visible home for our 2SLGBTQIA+ community (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual). Its programming, peer leadership, and on-site counseling reflect the lived experiences of our students, especially our 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

We also brought CSM closer to where people live and work. With the opening of College of San Mateo Coastside, families can enroll, meet with a counselor, and take a class right in Half Moon Bay. Bilingual town halls, family nights, and partnerships with local organizations continue to shape the site. College of San Mateo Coastside shows what it means to build community with community.

To us, liberatory education means removing barriers and opening doors: through research and internships, industry visits, and civic engagement, to opportunities that change lives close to home. It is the daily work of faculty who strengthen teaching with a focus on equity; staff who connect students to basic needs, wellness, and financial aid; and community partners who welcome our students into real-world learning.

These pages show the results: champions on the field, scholars in labs and studios, innovators in classrooms and makerspaces, and leaders who lift others as they rise. Together, we are building pathways that honor identity, expand opportunity, and advance shared prosperity across San Mateo County. We are excited to show you some of the ways in which College of San Mateo is helping to shape San Mateo County’s future.

En el Colegio de San Mateo, la educación es libera. Forma parte de nuestra visión como institución. Acompañamos a nuestros estudiantes para fortalecer su voz y construer poder en sus comunidades con el fin de construir su futuro. Este año llevamos aún más esa creencia a la práctica, alineando quiénes somos con lo que hacemos cada día.

Nuestras designaciones federales como Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) y Asian American, Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) no son solo títulos; son compromisos de servicio a nuestras comunidades. Nos retan a diseñar cursos, servicios y espacios donde la cultura sea un beneficio, la pertenencia fundamental y el éxito se comparta.

Me gustaría iluminar dos adiciones a nuestro Colegio que realmente dieron vida a estos compromisos. Este año, CSM
lanzó su Pride Center, el primero en nuestro Distrito. El Pride Center ofrece un hogar visible y cotidiano para nuestra comunidad 2SLGBTQIA+. Su programación, el liderazgo entre compañeros y la consejería en centro reflejan las experiencias vividas de nuestros estudiantes, en especial de nuestra comunidad 2SLGBTQIA+.

También acercamos CSM a donde la gente vive y trabaja. Con la apertura de College of San Mateo Coastside, las familias pueden inscribirse, agendar cita con un consejero y tomar clases allí mismo en Half Moon Bay. Foros bilingües, noches de familia y alianzas con organizaciones locales siguen dando forma a este sitio. CSM Coastside demuestra lo que significa construir comunidad con para la comunidad.

Para nosotros, la educación libera y significa eliminar barreras y abrir puertas: desde la investigación y las prácticas profesionales, las visitas a la industria y el compromiso cívico, hasta las oportunidades que transforman vidas cerca de casa.
